Pirate, WTF is Neil Mitchell?

Neil Mitchell is a legend here down south of the border as a prominent radio presenter. I am surprised you do not get his program up there, but again I say I do not believe Neil has been to the moon or I am sure you would have heard of him...Pirate

G'Day Aledal,
My copy of "Wind" finally arrived from Amazon and we enjoyed watching it over two nights (it is a long movie!)
As you said the sailing scenes were amazing and I actually didn't mind the plot. It was interesting to see how us Aussies were portrayed. This movie is surprisingly unknown 'downunder' so thanks for the tip! :)
I thought the Ben Hur chariot racing scene rip-off a bit over the top!
PS-Apologies for my confusion earlier over quotes.

Knew you were kidding with the quotes-glad you liked the movie. The Horatio Hornblower series was worth the $40. (14 hrs) :)

So-after all this-we agree that "Master And Commander" is the greatest sailing movie of all time.

Thank you Ditch Witch.

Hey Phil remember me? To the "Ends of the Earth" made me want to throw myself overboard. Very realistic and claustophobic. Great acting. Sam Neill.etc. Thanks for recommending it.Great period piece and plot... :)
But what about views of the boat going thru the water?
"Master and Commander" remains the one and only true "big wooden ship" sailing movie.

Australians let their hatred for R.Crowe taint their subjectivity.

Hi Aledal,

I saw Master and Commander a couple of years ago and loved it. I think Russel Crowe's a brilliant actor and I thought the movie was excellent.

There was just something about 'To the ends of the earth' that really stuck with me, the attritional nature of shipboard life, the seasickness, the weeks of being thrown around by the ocean, the crushing boredom that almost drives them all mad...aspects of life at sea that I had never even thought about...I mean the cabins...Oh My GOD!!..The MONTHS it took to travel distances it just takes us just HOURS cover these days.

It was a television drama made to a budget, its never going to come close to M&C in terms of realistic footage of a wooden sailing vessel going thru the water, but to me it certainly was an education....and will remain for me for a long time.....Pure Golding, of course!

Anyway I'm delighted you enjoyed the movie (if enjoyed is the right word!)

If you're not aware of the circumstances of the race (I wasn't) I think you'll find it a remarkable tale.
Interestingly, a documentary was screened here last week about the tragic death of Andrew McCauley the Aussie solo kayaker who died trying to paddle to New Zealand in his sea kayak. I thought there were some interesting parallels in both stories.

I should have known it was you who alerted me to "Deep Water" Stringy old pal!
Had to go back to the archives after watching it a second time.
Such an underated documentary - it has to grow on you.

Read the book too actually.

If I were him I would have returned and blamed most of what happened on the boat.
Afterall-it WAS the boat that failed far more than Donald. Even though he(and his sponsers) were responsible for its design and hasty departure.

I agree with you Aledal. :)
Such a remarkable set of circumstances, that combined, resulted in his tragic end. It would have taken only one change for him possibly to get away with it.
Sad. :(

BTW -"Breaking Away" is up there among my all time favourite movies:
'Dad: What is this?
Mom: It's sauteed zucchini.
Dad: It's I-tey food. I don't want no I-tey food.
Mom: It's not. I got it at the A&P. It's like... squash.
Dad: I know I-tey food when I hear it! It's all them "eenie" foods... zucchini... and linguini... and fettuccine. I want some American food, dammit! I want French fries!'

Thanks for that Aledal. Hope all is well with you too. :)
I recently ordered some great sea kayaking DVD's. No sailing, but some amazing clips of kayaking which have made me want to get out on the ocean in kayak mode. Aah -the versatility of the AI!
'This Is The Sea' series by Justine Curgenven:
