In the Challenge, can the amas be transported down to the water line separate from
the TI main hull? I am thinking about removing the amas from my TI whenever I bring it down to the water, so I am wondering how well the hull by itself can be moved via my kayak kart? I often leave the amas attached to my AI when I load/unload from my trailer, if I have to drag it down the beach by cart.
I will be interested on how easy the Challenge TIs will be to handle to and from the beaches. Hope they get some good videos!

This is all very helpful for me! We're still not sure what we want to do, but we like the idea of a Tandem Island in our future as we could see a small family heading out on that for a day of fun with the tramps in place. One thing that concerns me about getting a sail kit for the Revolution is that the mast on the sail kit doesn't seem very strong compared to the masts on the AI and TI. I don't want to wait for a weekend to go sailing only to find out that the wind is too strong to safely sail the Revo....

All I have to say is the more I look into the sailing options from Hobie, the more that Tandem Island looks like a FUN boat.... All the discussions on these pages certainly help fill in the blanks! Mark me down for another forum user who would like to see a user revue on the TI.

Thanks for all of your information! These forums are great!

Mickey,

Other than handling it on land, I think the TI will out sail the AI and handle just as well on the water. Once on land, then the 50% heaver hull and longer lengths of everything could offset the gains on the water. Try talking the wife into keeping the AI, at least until you get a few tandem AND solo sails in the TI to decide.

A great detailed Roadrunner review of the TI would help a lot towards answering many of our questions. (hint, hint!)

reconlon - I agree. In many ways I guess my reservations relate to the additional difficulties associated with managing the larger boat on land.
I have been in touch with my dealer and have now joined the waiting list for the first batch to land here. I hope they have more coming than people waiting. The introductory price is comparable to the US ($5,500 AUD) & he delivers from Canberra to Gippsland Lakes (6 hr drive) & is throwing in a new large plug-in kart and large silver wheels. :)
If they don't arrive soon - or they are already all taken, I will probably hold off until we return from our planned trip to Europe later this year.
One day I hope to come across & have some Hawaiian adventures with you :)
Off course you are always welcome to here - there's enough AIs here to make sure you would have one.

I am also contemplating whether to get a tandem. Occasionally, I go out with as many as 3 of my kids at once with the AI and the tramps. But, as much as I love going out with my kids, I also love going out alone.

I am leaning towards biting the bullet and just getting it. Then I need to figure out how to put it on my roof rack!

jzk - I usually trailer my AI - but have recently rooftopped it on my Pajero. I doubt that I could manage doing it with the TI on my own - or even with the assistance of my wife (I don't think that's a good plan anyhow!!). However I feel confident that it would be quite manageable with some mechanical assistance from something like the thule hullavator. I haven't got one of these yet but think that's the way I will manage it for rooftopping. The benefit being that I can still tow a caravan or similar behind on extended trips etc.
I also expect I will trailer the TI - just change the current AI cradles for TI ones.

In the WaterTribe Challenges you can do anything you want as long as you get no assistance from anyone AND carry all gear (including launch gear) with you throughout the race.

There are two "tandem pedal assisted sailing kayaks" being sailed in the WaterTribe Everglades Challenge--300 mile adventure/endurance race. They are both being sailed solo. One of these boats is described as a Hobie tandem AI. Assuming they are both tandem AIs, Hobie is endorsing sailing these boats solo in challenging conditions.

One of those entries will also participate in the Ultimate Florida Challenge, which is a continuation of the EC but circumnaviates the State of Florida.

The race(s) starts Saturday, Mar 6, at 7 am. The start of the race is considered one of the "filters" along the way. At the start, your loaded boat must be above the high tide line, and you alone (if solo) must launch it--this controls the size of sailing boats in the race. Everything used at the start of the race (like rollers) must be carried with you for the duration of the race. It is an interesting format. The winners of the various EC classes finish the race in about 3 days.

Chekika - very interesting - thanks for sharing. I would be interesting in hearing the results and any other relevant info. :)

augaug - from what you have written and based on my experience thus far I think your decision is an easy one :)
You need to get yourself on the waiting list for the new TI asap - it's the perfect SAFE/STABLE/FUN configuration and ideal for the sort of use you envisage

One question I'll be interested to see answered by you early adopters is: How hard will it be to haul a fully rigged TI up a boat ramp? Even the AI can be a bit challenging on steeper ramps. If you need to join the inevitable queues to reverse a trailer down a ramp to load the boat, that would be a considerable negative IMHO.

But you could have two "horses" the pull the TI wagon up the ramp instead of the one for the AI now.

Just heard from my dealer here.
Quote:
Currently there are firm orders in with deposits for sixty (60) Tandem Islands to come to Australia, delivery of the first shipment will be the last week of March or possibly early April. Orders place this week will be delivered in early June.

That means I will not be an early adaptor as we are going to Europe late Aug for a few months............... :(

Not to burst a bubble, but I believe we won't be in full production before late March.

Its a bummer but we are trying to keep on schedule.

Thanks Matt - better to tell it as it is than have everyone waiting expectantly for the arrival of the new baby.
Looks like mine was premature

Matt, Maybe while waiting for the masts, you could have them make a few of us some White TI hulls/ama? 8)

Do you believe buying a TI is a less intelligent thing to do if you intend to most often use it on your own? I guess sailing the Hobie on your own is not much of a problem and I'm sure handling the TI on land can be a problem if you're on your own. But what about pedalling? Will the TI feel heavy and slow and not very fun?

Would it be silly to try to pull a 23-32 feet long salingboat behind the TI for 100 or 500 meters or even longer? I guess it's possible when there is a good wind and/or you're two people pedalling, but what about one person pedaling?

Could you imagine taking the TI up onboard a sailingboat that size?
