Hobie Fishing Worlds 8 (HFW8) 2019 location - Press Release

OCEANSIDE, California (December 13, 2018)

Hobie®, the worldwide leader of personal watersport products, announced today that Hobie Fishing Worlds 8 (HFW8) will return to the birthplace of the iconic kayak fishing world championship, Australia.

After two previous worlds in Australia, New South Wales (2011) and Victoria (2013), HFW8 will head north to the world-famous Gold Coast in the sunny state of Queensland in 2019. Elite anglers from over 20 countries will battle it out for the 8th Hobie Fishing World Championship title from July 20th-27th.

The sundrenched, towering skyline, of the Gold Coast, reaches skyward on the south-east Queensland coastal strip which attracts tourists from across the globe. It is home to incredible theme parks like Dreamworld, Sea World and Wet’nWild, and a host of other amazing tourist attractions. While renowned as a party town, with flashing lights, pumping music and golden suntans, the Gold Coast’s pristine backcountry abounds with hiking trails that crisscross mountain ridges and valleys, a home to rare birds, exotic animals and untouched sub-tropical rainforest.

The location has proven time and again that it is a worthy venue for Australia’s Hobie Kayak Bream Series rounds and was a venue for the Australian Championship in 2016. It has established a record of great catches that have not only increased in numbers caught over the years, but also in fish weight, since Hobie has been holding tournaments at the HFW8 location.

It will certainly be an incredible environment to showcase the features of the latest Hobie MirageDrive® kayak, and the skills of the exceptional anglers who will fish from them. Over 45 of the world’s best kayak anglers have qualified to represent their country and compete at HFW8 by winning official tournaments, or series, across five continents.

HFW8 will follow a five-day tournament format, including two pre-fish days where anglers are able to familiarize themselves with the target species, locate fish and develop strategies and techniques to employ during competition. The world championship will follow, contested over three days, where anglers will bring back Yellow Fin Bream, in their Hobie V2 Livewells, to the championship event site. A live weigh-in of fish, will be held at the site, which will be streamed live to viewers around the world.

After the fish have been weighed on stage, they will be released into the Nerang River waterway to swim away freely into their natural environment. HFW8 aims to encourage further growth in the individual fish released, and in the sustainability of the species, by maintaining the ecological balance in the local marine environment.

The current world champion, Salah Eddibe, from Germany, won an automatic entry and a free trip to HFW8 in Australia along with Mark Young (AUS), who won the Angler’s Choice Award and Edi Brader (AUT) who won a special Tournament Director’s Award, at HFW7 in Sweden. Steve Lessard (USA) and Ma Xiaohong (CHN) also receive wildcard entries as past world champions.

A sponsor of the event since its inception in 2011, the international fishing giant Daiwa, will make a welcome return as the naming rights sponsor for the tournament. Daiwa will be supported by Lowrance and Power-Pole as the three major sponsors for the world championship. HFW8 also has a proud, and close association with Gerber; Lurefans; Scotty; Aftco; Plano; Savage Gear; Railblaza and Hobie Polarized, all key stakeholders in helping to produce an exceptional, sporting spectacular.

Like previous worlds, HFW8 anglers will not only compete, but share expertise, knowledge, and skills. In the end, there will be one world champion, but everyone will return home having made new friends, learned new skills, and having had an exceptional immersion in a new culture. Everyone will be a winner!
