It is said that there’s no such thing as bad weather… only appropriate clothing. I try to live by this when it comes to my outdoor winter activities.
Living in coastal North Carolina has its wintry challenges, but it’s not impossible to enjoy stand up paddling year-round. Most days are in the 50’s and the water temperature never really drops below 50F either.

Even when my morning sessions are hovering around the freezing point, I’m able to paddle almost every day with the right amount of neoprene and a few base layers. Good face coverage, gloves, and 7mm booties make all the difference in the world.
If the winds are howling around 40mph and its well below freezing, chances are I won’t go out on the water for SUP. Although rare, I still don’t let it defeat me, and I keep up my beach bum lifestyle by enjoying other coastal activities like fat tire biking.
